Hi there - a very happy New Year to you all and may 2012 be a healthy and prosperous year.
First of all, my apologies for the absence of the draft from my previous post. When I looked at the preview it was there but once published it disappeared. Will try again ! Linda asked for the draft number from Handweaving.net it is draft number 26993.
Here is a reminder of how it looked on the loom.
And here is the finished scarf...........................
I have had these labels for some time, I'm not all that keen on them but decided I should really make a start and use them. I would prefer the lettering to be a bit smaller. Next time I have some made I will have to pay a bit more and have them more to my liking. They are also a bit of a fiddle to stitch in place !
The scarf is very soft and drapes well. The colours are very neutral but it is easy on the eye. I like the merino silk mixture very much. This particular yarn was very stretchy and although I wove to two meters, when I took it off the loom it must have retracted about six inches ! Fortunately it didn't shrink much in the wash and the scarf is still plenty long enough.
All in all, a nice weave and I would do it again.
So, what next ? I have long been an admirer of the undulating twill design, I think it makes a very classic looking scarf especially done in two quite similar shades. I hunted on Handwoven.net again and found an eight shaft draft number 61537. I set it up in Fibreworks PCW.......
As you can see all the work is in the threading and the tie up, the treadling is very very easy. For warp I used a 24/2 merino silk in a colour called winter sea from Helen at Ripplescrafts The sett was 24 dpi 2 per dent in a 12 dent reed.
For weft I used a cashmere wool mixture a surprise Christmas present sent to me by my friend Ellen Turner it was 28/2 and just a slightly different shade of green.
This picture shows it on the loom with the undulations growing nicely !
Here is a close up of the material.....................
And here is the finished scarf. Again, once it was washed and ironed it was very very soft and drapes nicely.
I am very pleased with this draft, it makes a very nice scarf and I will use it again probably on my next project !
My New Year weaving has got started on a positive note, long may that continue !
Thanks again for visiting and I will look forward to your thoughts and comments.
Take care......until next time..........................

Wow, the scarves are beautiful. You also have mastered putting the drafts into your blog - well done! Glad to see things are going so well at the loom - kind of makes me want to get to my looms one of these days. Keep up the wonderful work. I totally agree, you might be happier with a smaller label, especially on those beautiful, fine scarves. Weaverly yours .... Barbara
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful diamond twill scarf!! And I absolutely love the cool white look and the soft shine of it. It is really elegant and would make a nice accessory for a night out at something fancy!!Might copy you there and use that draft one day (having had some lovely cool silk to play with ;-))
ReplyDeleteThe undulating twill also came out just right and the softness almost comes across through the screen. I can understand you wanting to do this again too.
Yes, I wish you a happy weaving year, Dorothy, may it continue as well as it has obviously begun!
Hi, Dorothy,
ReplyDeleteI have the exact same twill on my new 8-shaft loom as the very first project. My sett is the same as yours, and my colors are similar but with a little more contrast, I think. I'm using a teal 24-2 merino as warp and a soft sage green 24-2 merino-silk as weft. I hope mine comes out as beautiful as yours.
I enjoy your blog.

What a wonderful start to your year... and the word is Elegance! Such beautiful drape and sheen!
ReplyDeleteYou have arrived my dear!
:) Susan
Dorothy, I am humbled! These two pieces are absolutely stunning. So classy and, as Susan so aptly described, elegant! You are absolutely off to a great start for 2012! I rather like the label...let there be no squinting to see who wove these fabulous scarves. I started out with the printed labels in a type that matched my confidence level; and yes, you just about have to squint to read them. I figured when I made it through a hundred of them, I will be at the level that warrants an embroidered tag. I plan on getting one that leaves no doubt about who did that fabulous job......like yours. It is a professional and well-deserved finish. Kudos, and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful, Dorothy!
ReplyDeleteI'm about to warp for an undulating twill scarf (20/2 bamboo Ruby warp, burnt orange weft [recipient's choice; second will use a violet weft]) and played a bit with treadling -- using a "tromp as writ" also produces some lovely medalions.
Cheers and Happy New Year!
Wayne
They are both just gorgeous!

Well, I've got to say that great minds think alike....while looking for a new project I was paging through a bunch that I'd saved from Handweaving.net some time ago and I stopped at one that I found particularly interesting- it was the same pattern as your blue/green scarf! I'm really happy to see how lovely it turned out and I have plans to give it a try too!
