Bookmarks

 Hi there !

On the loom this week I have linen and silk bookmarks.

You may remember that Susan, aka, weeverwoman made beautiful bookmarks back in July. Susan very kindly sent me one of them and I just loved it. It was a very fine linen warp in a beautiful golden colour with a fine black weft. She also sent me the draft she used so I thought I would have a go and make some of my own.

I didn't seem to have such stunning colours but I was looking at our Buddleia plant with its lovely purple flowers and pale green leaves and it got me thinking ! I had some fine pale green linen and some purple 60/2 silk, I wonder if that would do ? I wound the linen warp and doubled up the silk for the edge threads and the weft. It was a 12 shaft draft and I followed it to the letter and got started with the weaving. The result was really very nice, the colours did well together and I had no problems...............................

However, when I compared my bookmark with Susan's bookmark I had a completely different result and neither of us really know why ! See what you think, Susan's lovely golden one on the right and my poorly coloured one on the left.............................

So, suddenly without trying, I have managed to design something different ! I like the different pattern and that's quite lucky as there may be ten of them by the time I'm finished.

Quite satisfying to do and quick enough not to get bored with them. They will make lovely small Christmas presents. When I need a quick to do project there maybe some more of these ! An excellent way to use up left over bits and pieces.

My thanks to Susan for her inspiration !

  2. Interesting how you have come up with a different pattern, if you followed Susan's draft - what's with that??? Weaving can make one really think at times. Your bookmarks are quite nice - good for you giving it a try. Weaverly yours .. Barbara

  3. I like your version! I also like the colours you chose...

Bookmarks are a fun project aren't they? I'm wondering why I didn't try weaving them sooner!

  4. Amazing, how the same pattern can end up looking quite different...both lovely, and unique. I can see some similarities but there is very definately treadling differences I think. I too fell in love with weaving bookmarks this year for the GCW exchange.

  5. Isn't that the craziest thing! ...and there are some significant differences between the two! They're both great patterns, and your bookmarks are lovely, Dorothy! What a nice change of pace with a nice supply of gifts to show for it. This is kind of like being in a weaving class, where different weavers come up with such great differences across the same project. What fun!

  6. That is one of the many fascinating things about weaving, isn't it? It can keep surprising you, and when the surprise is as excellent as these bookmarks, it is great! Other surprises are less fun.
I too love the fine purple and green colours and find the design very lovely. Hmmm, may want to try weaving bookmarks one day.... :-)
